Being a part of a team, 10 years with the Miracle League
NORTHWOOD, Ohio (13abc Action News) - For more ten years the Miracle League of Northwest Ohio has been changing lives. Their inclusive view of children and adults with special needs has put smiles on their faces and the faces of friends and family.
Eight weeks a year eight teams come together to play baseball. It's a modified approach to accommodate those with down syndrome, cerebral palsy, blindness, or any other developmental disabilities.
"We actually get to be normal kids for once," Cole Kwapich said.
The original field the organization used in 2007 was made of gravel. The updated current field is designed to allow wheel chairs and walkers to easily roll on its surface. The bases and home plate are imprinted onto the specialized field.
That field, however, is running out of life. Miracle League officials were told the surface would last seven to ten years when it was installed in 2009. Soon it'll be time for a new surface. The organization needs help raising the funds to pay for that and they're also raising funds for a building to house handicap accessible restrooms and concessions.
